Habits are a reflection of a collection of daily choices. Research from Duke University in 2006 found that over 40% of what we do is determined by habits, not decisions. This suggests that we can change a huge part of our lives just by transforming bad habits and creating better practices instead.

As I’ve written elsewhere, resilience is our ability to adapt to change and transform an experience into growth so that we can emerge stronger than before. The Latin root word for “resilient” is “resilire,” which means “jump backward, bounce.” We can interpret it as a rebirth — a recovery from a difficult situation. By learning to give birth to a resilient mind, we can learn to build a solid groundwork for evolution and growth in and out of the office.

Being resilient allows you to understand that life is full of challenges and opportunities to change obstacles into growth by learning how to remain open, flexible and willing to adapt to change and emerge.

Leaders in his new era require much more than knowledge and experience in an area or industry. They require an open mind and perspective. Here are some habits to strengthen your resilience.

1. Observe your internal dialogue and identify your thought patterns. Your inner dialogue can improve or interfere with your performance, creativity and well-being. Learning to observe your thoughts without judgment is a practice and daily commitment to observe how you feel and think and choose what inspires your growth versus what is noise.

2. Focus on the present. Setting aside a few minutes for mindful breathing, meditation or taking a minute to drink a glass of water with all your attention can make a big difference to your day. Set an alarm to take mindful breaks of your choice. According to the Mayo Clinic, meditation is “a simple, fast way to reduce stress,” gain a new perspective on stressful situations and increase self-awareness and tolerance.

3. Become a vessel of peace and inspiration for yourself and others. Being open to new scenarios and creative solutions requires a subtle change of state or perspective.

4. Work on progress, not perfection. Keep nurturing your dreams, ideas and projects daily. Moving slowly is better than staying stagnant. Write down your ideas in a notebook; keep words, drawings or sentences that inspire you. A resilient mind is the one that is always ready to discover new pearls of wisdom.

5. Observe and express what you feel with respect and ease. Learning how to communicate with others and yourself allows you to learn and grow from every circumstance and keep track of your progress.

6. Try to read as much as you can and explore different areas and industries. Learning to observe the world through different eyes and perspectives allows you to expand your mind and understanding of your environment.

7. Practicing and expressing gratitude for your past, present and future is a fantastic way to recover from difficult situations and emerge with new tools, discovering new sides of yourself. But most importantly, it’s a reminder that nothing is eternal and there is always an opportunity to experience a new beginning.
